Come and see the wonderful WA!
Hi Everyone,
If you’re considering attending the 2021 ANZAED Conference in Perth, you might like to take advantage of the opportunity to see our beautiful state. Last year (mid-August to end of September) I travelled up north and would love to share some of the spectacular scenery and my experiences. I’ve selected three spots up north (where the weather is WARM!!!) that are easily accessible by plane. Let me know if you have any questions.
Anthea Fursland
1) Broome and Cape Leveque
If it’s sun and lazing on a beach that you want, the flight to Broome airport is 2 hour 25 minutes from Perth (first two photos). You can also take a day tour to the Horizontal Falls, which is mind-blowing (third photo). For those of you who are more adventurous and have more time, hire a 4-wheel drive and head up to Kooljaman at the tip of Cape Leveque (2.5 hours’ drive) for a few days. You can camp, glamp in a safari tent or hire a cabin and see our famous red dirt, cliffs and beaches. You can go on local cruises, take an Aboriginal guided tour, visit a pearl farm.

2) Karajini National Park
Karajini is perhaps the most spectacular site in WA, with its stunning gorges and swimming holes. Paraburdoo airport is 105 minutes from Perth, and you will need to hire a car, preferably a 4-wheel drive, for the 90 minute drive to the Eco Retreat or 105 minute drive to Dales Campground. Karajini offers camping (Dales; but you’ll need a tent or caravan), glamping in a safari tent or hiring a cabin (Eco Retreat). There are clifftop walks overlooking the magnificent gorges and steps down to the swimming areas. For those of you who are more adventurous, there are some pretty exciting steps and ladders down to certain otherwise unreachable gorges

3) Ningaloo Reef
Ningaloo reef is WA’s biggest kept secret. We all know about the Great Barrier Reef, but Ningaloo? It is reached by travelling to Exmouth (Learmouth) airport (2 hours). You’ll need to hire a car – again, a 4-wheel drive is a must, to reach the beaches from where you can swim over the reef. Yes…it is only metres from the shoreline! You can stay in Exmouth itself (just under an hour’s drive from the main beaches for snorkelling), but I recommend Yardie Homestead campsite (with chalets, cabins and Shearers’ quarters in addition to camping) where you can walk to the beach. Another thrill for me was hiring a Microlite (think glider with engine, carrying one passenger each) for a 90-minute tour over the area, seeing dolphins, whales, dugongs, rays, turtles and the reef itself from above.
